The summer of 2020 was difficult for everyone. COVID was the new epidemic, and we were all confined to our quarters. Bruce Bennett had an idea to break the boredom of quarantine.
Bruce Bennett and Allison Roberts began mixing mortar for the oceanic driveway at Spring Creek as a distraction from being confined. Using a series of carved stone fish, the driveway presents a cadence simulating the flow of a school of fish towards the pond in front of the house. Merpeople swim at the bottom of the sea, welcoming guests to their grotto. Sparkling glass at the apex of the driveway honors these words from Leonard Cohen:
“All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”

And Jesus was a sailor
When He walked upon the water
And He spent a long time watching
From His lonely wooden tower
And when He knew for certain
Only drowning men could see Him
He said, “All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”
But He Himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
